Vienenburg lies in the northern Harz foothills where the Radau flows into the Oker, and has been part of Goslar since 2014. Its station was built in 1840 on Germany’s first state railway and is one of the oldest surviving stations in the country; today it houses a railway museum. On the edge of town is the Vienenburger See, a former gravel pit with a boat jetty and a café, with the open-air pool right next to it. Our apartments are in a restored brick house on Osterwiecker Straße.

Behind Wöltingerode Abbey, founded in 1174, rises the Harly, a 256-metre ridge with a lookout tower and views of the Harz. Buses and regional trains take you to Goslar with its imperial palace and the Rammelsberg mine, and there are direct trains to Bad Harzburg and Wernigerode too. With the guest card, buses across the Harz are free.
